Tata Steel Chess 2024 sees the return of World Champion Ding Liren, with Magnus Carlsen missing for the first time since 2014.

WORLD DESK – The Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2024 is set to witness the comeback of World Champion GM Ding Liren in Wijk aan Zee, marking a significant moment in the global chess calendar.

However, the event will be missing eight-time winner GM Magnus Carlsen for the first time since 2014. The tournament, scheduled from January 13th to 28th, features a youthful and dynamic lineup, including seven top-20 players and three world champions, with no participant older than 33.

Ding Liren’s return is particularly noteworthy as the 31-year-old world champion has not played an official game since May, due to an unspecified illness.

His participation in the Tata Steel Chess Masters is eagerly anticipated by fans, as it marks his first official game in 244 days.

The absence of Magnus Carlsen is a notable omission, attributed to his busy schedule. Tournament Director Van den Berg hopes for Carlsen’s return in 2025.

The 86th edition of the Tata Steel chess tournament promises an exciting mix of styles, ages, and strengths. The Masters category includes prominent players like Alireza Firouzja, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Anish Giri, D Gukesh, and R Praggnanandhaa.

The Challengers segment features talents such as Anton Korobov, Hans Moke Niemann, and Harika Dronavalli.

Tournament Director Jeroen van den Berg expressed enthusiasm for this edition, highlighting the unprecedented participation of three reigning world champions and four female players. Ju Wenjun, Harika Dronavalli, Divya Deshmukh, and Eline Roebers will be competing, with Wenjun Ju playing in the Masters.

This tournament not only showcases top chess talent but also reflects the growing diversity and global reach of the game. The absence of leading American players and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (MVL), along with Carlsen’s non-participation, leaves room for new narratives and potential upsets in this prestigious chess event.
