Padmashree Chutni Mahato leads a campaign in Jamshedpur to eradicate witchcraft, calling for awareness and police-administration cooperation to end the practice.
JAMSHEDPUR – Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan has initiated a campaign to eradicate the practice of witchcraft in society under the leadership of Padmashree Chutni Mahato.
On Friday, an awareness rally led by Chutni Mahato reached the East Singhbhum district headquarters, appealing to all to join the fight against witchcraft.
Mahato stressed the necessity for police and administration to actively participate in this movement, attributing the continuation of the practice to lack of awareness in rural areas.
He also expressed concerns regarding the police’s methods and their effectiveness in combating this issue.
National President of Sengel Abhiyan and former MP Salkhan Murmu referred to witchcraft as a curse for the state, urging every section of society to work towards eradicating it entirely.
According to Murmu, the only way to put an end to this evil practice is through comprehensive awareness.
She identified three main factors responsible for the persistence of witchcraft: the rural self-governance system, the Ojha Guni community, and the police-administration’s approach, holding all three accountable.
In addition to demanding a vehicle and honorarium for Padma Shri Chhutni Mahato from the government, Murmu announced her intention to meet with the Governor to ensure support for Mahato’s campaign.
Murmu stated that the Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan would extend throughout the entire state, expressing confidence that by the end of 2023, witchcraft would be completely eradicated from Jharkhand.
