Fear of destructive elephant herd interrupts agricultural activities in Kaliyam hamlet, Chakulia district, leading to economic distress for local farmers.
JAMSHEDPUR – A herd of 15 elephants descended on Kaliyam hamlet in Chakulia district’s Kaliyam Panchayat on Sunday night, causing extensive damage.
Home items were destroyed and the door to the PM-authorized residence of Sunil Mahto was smashed by the elephants.
The same herd trampled the paddy straw prepared by Bhavatosh Mahato in his fields, which had a significant impact on the local farming community.
According to local farmers, elephant disturbances have been an issue for the past year, with crops frequently being heavily damaged by the roaming herds.
The persistent fear of elephant attacks has effectively paralyzed farming activities in the area, with farmers staying up all night out of concern for their livelihoods.
Despite pleas from local residents for the Forest Department to relocate the elephants, efforts to remove the animals from the village have been unsuccessful.
The issue came to the attention of Chief Daso Hembram following reports of elephants damaging paddy straw and housing in the area.
He examined the devastation and encouraged those affected to fill out and submit forms to the Forest Department to receive compensation for the damages caused by the elephants.
