RANCHI – Baby Devi, the wife of the late Minister Jagarnth Mahto, was sworn in as a minister in the Jharkhand government led by Hemant Soren on Monday.

The ministerial post had been vacant following the untimely death of her husband, Jagarnath Mahato.

The oath-taking ceremony at the Raj Bhavan saw the presence of numerous political figures, including Hafizul Hasan Ansari, Vinod Pandey, Bandhu Tirkey, and Shilpi Neha Tirkey, who extended their wishes to Baby Devi.

Earlier in June, Baby Devi had discussions with JMM supremo Shibu Soren and Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

Although two candidates were initially under consideration, Baby Devi was ultimately chosen for the ministerial position.

The late Jagarnath Mahto, a key JMM MLA from the Dumri constituency, was a significant part of the separate statehood movement led by Shibhu Soren.

After contracting Covid-19 in 2020, he underwent a lung transplant but fell ill again during the recent Jharkhand budget session.

He was airlifted to Chennai for treatment, where he passed away on April 6.
