RBI to Phase Out ₹2000 Notes, Advocates Transition Towards Smaller Denominations

RBI discontinues ₹2000 notes, citing declining circulation and aims for a more efficient currency system. Public given until September 30, 2023, to exchange.

Desk – In a move that could potentially reshape the landscape of cash transactions in India, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to withdraw the ₹2000 denomination banknotes from circulation.

This decision, reached during a meeting of RBI’s central board of directors on May 18, 2023, comes in response to the diminishing prevalence of these notes.

As per the RBI’s data, as of March 31, 2023, ₹2000 notes comprised only 13.8 percent of all currency notes in circulation in terms of value.

The central bank believes that the withdrawal of these notes will lead to a more efficient and convenient currency system, encouraging transactions in smaller denominations and consequently decreasing the overall use of cash.

While the RBI has not explicitly laid out a timeline for the note withdrawal, it has assured the public that adequate time will be provided to deposit the notes in banks.

Specifically, individuals can exchange or deposit ₹2000 notes from May 23 to September 30, 2023.

The move has elicited mixed reactions from experts. While some welcome it, anticipating a reduction in the circulation of black money, others express concerns about potential inconvenience and challenges in cash transactions for the public.

The RBI maintains a confident stance, stating that the decision aligns with the best interests of the nation.
