Desk: India has rejected China’s renaming of places in Arunachal Pradesh and has reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is an inalienable part of India. China’s decision to rename 11 places in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh has been strongly condemned by India too.
The Chinese Ministry of Urban Affairs issued a notification on Sunday, renaming certain geographical areas of Arunachal Pradesh, which China refers to as South Tibet. The places include mountain peaks, rivers, and residential areas, and their names will now be written in Mandarin characters on Chinese maps.
This is not the first time that China has attempted to change the names of places in Arunachal Pradesh. In April 2017 and December 2021, China had previously changed the names of places in the region. Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi strongly rejected China’s move, stating that Arunachal Pradesh was and will remain an integral part of India.
In a statement, Bagchi said, “We have seen such reports. This is not the first time China has made such an attempt. We reject this outright. Arunachal Pradesh is, has been, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India. Attempts to assign invented names will not alter this reality.”
The border conflict between India and China has been intensifying since April-May 2020, starting on the eastern Ladakh border. The conflict resulted in a clash in Galwan, where 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives. India claims that many Chinese soldiers were also killed. Following diplomatic and military level meetings, troops were withdrawn from some areas. However, the conflict has also started on the Arunachal border.

China’s latest move to rename places in Arunachal Pradesh has sparked outrage and concerns about the country’s territorial claims. India has been firm in its stance that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India and has rejected China’s attempts to change the names of places in the region.
