Communicating correctly

You may find it uneasy or may be unbelievable that our youths have one serious complaint against us elders that they are not being heard. Really? Despite having n number of communication devices? You may argue, but yes that’s the reality of our patriarchal, authoritarian society.

What we need to understand is that communication is a two way process that involves speaking and listening both and in any healthy communication, the position of the speaker and listener must be interchangeable. But what has usually been observed that the role and positions of the speaker-listener in our societal structure have been fixed and if one tries to break it they are accused of crossing the boundaries.

In the family unit, father will be the speaker, others have to listen to him. In the academic Institutions, teacher will speak and students are allowed only to listen to. Same pattern is being followed in the work places too, the boss will only speak, the job of the rest is to listen to him only.

This can not be regarded as the correct way of communication.

Such dynamics of communication needs to be changed. When we give space to children to speak up at home, they learn the correct way to present themselves in the front of others.

It makes them learn how to articulate their thoughts in effective way. The feeling of belonging and mutual respect also increases. Whether their idea is being accepted or not is immaterial but they must be allowed to put it on table. Parents must also note that how much trivial their idea is they should never mock or ridicule them.

The class room ecology is also changing rapidly. Teachers are not the first and ultimate source of knowledge.

The students are coming with good background study these days, Therefore, suppressing their opinion or stopping them from sharing information they have, can not be regarded healthy decision.

The diliberations of the classroom helps students in broadening their mind and enriches them with different perspectives.

Boardrooms must also allow every one to speak but at the same time encourage each one to listen to others patiently and positively.

Corporate places have cutthroat competition so keeping the atmosphere healthy for the exchange of opinions is a huge task for the boss. Even bosses need to be accomodative of different view points presented by their subordinates.

Allow all voices around you and listen them carefully, believe me , it will make your more world beautiful.
