Minor explosion during slag operations in Tata Steel, 2 injured
Jamshedpur: A minor explosion during slag pooling operations at Slag Road Gate have been reported in Tata Steel hot metal pooling pit. Two employees have sustained ‘superficial’ burn injuries. An investigation has been launched by the company into the reasons for the blast.
In a statement, the company said: “We wish to state that at around 12:30 pm on January 18, 2021, during slag pooling operations at the Hot metal pooling pit near Slag Road gate, a minor explosion occurred with fire spatters in the near vicinity. Investigation has revealed that the blast occurred due to pouring of hot slag on the prevailing moisture in the pit. There was spattering of fire in the vicinity of the blast which was immediately controlled as per established fire control and safety procedures.”
It went on to add: “Unfortunately, the attending foreman and an employee on contract sustained ‘superficial’ burn injuries. Necessary medical first aid was administered to both the employees and they are back at work.”
The statement said: “There has been no damage to any operating plant or equipment and normal operations have commenced. The incident will be further investigated to ensure such incidents do not recur going forward.”
