Kolkata, July 4 (IANS) Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has yet to submit documents in a recent traffic violation case, police sources said on Saturday evening.

Banerjee was accused of violating the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. Based on that allegation, the Kalighat police sent a notice to the Diamond Harbour MP and requested certain documents.

Although the documents were supposed to be submitted to the police station by Saturday, police sources said that they have not received them. As a result, it is learnt that another notice may be sent to Banerjee, once again seeking documents related to the case.

On Wednesday, an FIR was lodged against Banerjee at Kalighat police station in south Kolkata, based on a complaint by a Baguiati resident, Rajiv Sarkar. He alleged that security guards were gerously driving Banerjee’s car, which violates several sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The person alleged that, under the Motor Vehicle Act (Section 123), no driver or passenger may travel in a moving vehicle while hanging. Secondly, according to Section 184, gerous driving in a moving vehicle is a punishable offence. Therefore, the complainant has demanded appropriate action against Banerjee in this incident.

A case has been registered against Banerjee under Sections 281 (any person driving or riding a vehicle on a public way in a rash or negligent manner that engers human life or is likely to cause injury), 125 (rash driving), 223 (disobedience of lawful orders) and 3(5) (common intention) of BNS and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

It may be noted that Banerjee is already facing corruption charges. He has been under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a long time. The signature-mismatch case and his controversial “DJ will be played after May 4” remark have increased his discomfort.

Meanwhile, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has withdrawn Banerjee’s protection in the defamation case filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kailash Vijayvargiya’s son Akash Vijayvargiya. There have also been allegations of corruption against his initiative ‘Sebashray’, which he launched for the people of the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency.
