CHAIBASA – A speeding tractor critically injured a schoolteacher on Monday along the Sonua-Chakradharpur main road in West Singhbhum district. The collision occurred near Nishchitpur School and was caught in full on a CCTV camera installed at the spot.
Bandana Mahto, 23, a resident of Nishchitpur, works as a bell-system teacher at SS Plus-2 High School in Sonua. She was on her way to the school when a tractor coming from the direction of Chakradharpur hit her at high speed. The impact was severe enough to leave her with serious injuries.
Local residents and family members rushed to her aid immediately after the crash. They took her to the Community Health Centre in Sonua for emergency treatment. Doctors administered first aid but, given the severity of her condition, decided she needed more advanced care.
She was therefore referred to Sadar Hospital in Chaibasa for further treatment. Meanwhile, Sonua police reached the hospital as soon as they learned of the accident and checked on the injured teacher’s condition.
Officers have since opened a formal investigation into the crash. Police are working to identify the tractor involved and are preparing further legal action as the probe continues. Investigators are treating the CCTV footage from the accident site as a key piece of evidence in the case.
The stretch of road near Nishchitpur has seen a string of traffic accidents in West Singhbhum in recent months, with several speeding-related crashes reported across the district. Officials have not yet commented on whether any additional safety measures will follow this latest incident.
