Special Program Launched to Train Rural SC/ST Youth in Skills

JAMSHEDPUR – XLRI Xavier School of Management has taken a significant step in supporting the National Skill Development Mission by launching a specialized six-month program for SC/ST youth. This initiative aims to empower rural underprivileged communities through skill-based training programs.

Focus on Skill Development

For the first time, XLRI’s Father McGrath Centre for Skill Development has rolled out a structured program targeting rural poor communities. Training modules include data entry, communicative English, garment and fashion design, electrical work, and plumbing. Over 100 SC/ST students have already benefitted from internships under this initiative.

On December 18, 2024, 81 students received their certificates at XLRI’s Jamshedpur campus. The event was graced by Father Jerome Cutinha, S.J., President of the Jamshedpur Jesuit Society, as the chief guest. Academic Dean Dr. Sanjay Patro also marked his presence.

Revisiting XLRI’s Core Mission

Father Donald D’Silva, the program convener, emphasized the institute’s commitment to social impact. “XLRI had overlooked its original vision. Our platinum jubilee year gave us the opportunity to reconnect with our core mission and rural communities. Supporting marginalized youth and creating societal impact is more meaningful than personal achievements,” he stated.

The program operates under the guidance of Jerome Sequeira and Biranchi Soreng at XLRI’s extended centers in Bhubaneswar and Phulbani.

Cultural Celebrations and Youth Empowerment

The certification ceremony featured cultural performances, including dances and skits, showcasing the trainees’ learnings and skills. Faculty and students from XLRI applauded the talents and efforts of the participants, recognizing their potential to contribute to India’s development.

XLRI reaffirmed its commitment to uplifting underprivileged communities, envisioning a future where these youth become integral to mainstream society and contribute to a self-reliant India.
