Jamshedpur residents face risk crossing Jugsalai Railway tracks daily

3-km detour forces people to risk lives; new overbridge under construction

Key Points:

  • People cross railway tracks daily, risking their lives
  • Construction of a new foot overbridge is underway
  • The project, costing ₹2 crore, will be completed by January

JAMSHEDPUR – Thousands of people in Jamshedpur travel daily by crossing railway tracks, risking their lives due to the lack of adequate pedestrian infrastructure.

Currently, residents face significant difficulties due to the lengthy 3-kilometer flyover. Despite one flyover providing relief to vehicular traffic, pedestrians find the distance impractical. As a result, they opt to cross the railway tracks directly to save time. However, this practice has led to several fatalities over time.

Meanwhile, in response to growing demands from locals, the railway department has initiated the construction of a new foot overbridge. The project, costing approximately ₹2 crore, aims to ensure safe passage for pedestrians and is expected to be completed by January. Once operational, the bridge will help pedestrians avoid dangerous track crossings.

Persistent safety concerns

Local residents argue that the absence of a shorter route has forced them to risk their lives daily. A pedestrian shared, “Walking 3 kilometers for a few seconds’ journey is not practical. The new overbridge will provide much-needed relief.”

Many deaths have been reported due to people crossing the tracks to avoid the lengthy detour. Residents expressed hope that the new foot overbridge would significantly reduce such incidents.

Addressing pedestrian needs

The railway department aims to improve pedestrian safety while addressing residents’ longstanding demands. The project, once completed, will ensure pedestrians can cross tracks safely and efficiently. The new infrastructure is expected to bring significant relief to the thousands who commute daily.
