The free-flowing discussion explored Prof. Rai’s diverse journey, combining leadership, spirituality, and Indian values in an engaging conversation that resonated with viewers.

From Humble Beginnings to IIM Leadership

Prof. Himanshu Rai shared his inspiring journey, beginning in a modest family where education was a priority. His mother, a Sanskrit scholar, nurtured his knowledge of Sanskrit, while his father invested significantly in ensuring he learned English from a British tutor. This early foundation shaped his proficiency in languages and his interest in ancient scriptures.

Prof. Rai further reflected on his transformative experience at Tata Steel, where his professional role introduced him to mountaineering under the mentorship of legendary climber Bachendri Pal, India’s first woman to summit Mount Everest. Recalling a profound moment in the Himalayas, he narrated how a passage from Alice in Wonderland inspired him to pursue clarity in his purpose.

Academic Excellence and Leadership at IIM Indore

Discussing his role at IIM Indore, Prof. Rai highlighted the institution’s achievements, including its triple crown accreditation and ranking among the top management institutes globally. He attributed IIM Indore’s success to strong leadership and a collective vision of contributing to nation-building.

Notably, IIM Indore pioneered a five-year integrated management program, which initially faced skepticism but has now become a benchmark in management education. Prof. Rai emphasized the institution’s commitment to research, innovation, and programs addressing national challenges, such as sanitation and education.

Indian Values and Management Education

A key focus of the discussion was the integration of Indian values and ancient knowledge into modern management.

Prof. Rai shared how courses like Management through Mithila Art, Ethics, and Leadership through the Bhagavad Gita are part of IIM Indore’s curriculum. He emphasized the relevance of Indian scriptures, such as the Mahabharata, in teaching negotiation and leadership.

He stated, “Instead of criticizing the Western perspective, we should bring forward our ancient knowledge with new relevance to inspire the world.”

Personal Pursuits: Mountaineering and Yoga

Prof. Rai also spoke about his passion for mountaineering and yoga, describing the Himalayas as his “spiritual abode.” Guided by Bachendri Pal, he scaled peaks like Kilimanjaro, Kalapathar, and Rudra Gaira, finding in these experiences humility, focus, and clarity. He credited yoga for fostering physical, mental, and spiritual discipline, which he practices and promotes extensively.

Future Endeavors

Prof. Rai revealed plans for upcoming books, including works on Ayurveda, crisis leadership, and translations of Upanishads into English. His current book, Pravah, combines spiritual and philosophical essays rooted in Indian traditions, reflecting his deep appreciation for Sanskrit and Indian culture.

The enlightening conversation between Nityanand Misra and Prof. Himanshu Rai continues to receive praise for its depth and inspiration. Their exchange highlighted the importance of self-reflection, discipline, and the timeless wisdom of Indian values in shaping personal and professional excellence.
