SERAIKELA – A 27-year-old man was hacked to death near Shitala Temple in Boloydih on Saturday afternoon, sending shock through the Adityapur police station area of Seraikela-Kharsawan district.
The deceased was identified as Jagannath Gope, alias Kada, a resident of Goppada. The attack occurred around 1 p.m., according to police.
Four to five assailants attacked Gope with sharp-edged weapons. He sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.
The attackers fled the scene immediately after the assault. Meanwhile, teams from Adityapur and Gamharia police stations rushed to the site after being alerted.
Police took the body into custody and sent it for a post-mortem examination. They also began collecting evidence from the crime scene.
Sonu Gope, the victim’s brother, accused Shivam Pramanik, Shibu and Ganesh, among others, of the killing. He said a dispute broke out between Jagannath and Ganesh on Saturday morning over an unspecified issue.
A man named Prem Nayak later called Jagannath out of his house, according to Sonu Gope. He was killed a short while afterward.
Family members said Jagannath’s wife, Parvati Gope, died about a year and a half ago. He is survived by an eight-year-old son, Ritesh Gope, and a two-year-old daughter, Reshmi Gope.
Given the severity of the case, the SDPO reached the spot on the instructions of the superintendent of police to monitor the investigation. Police are conducting raids at possible hideouts to arrest the accused.
The killing comes days after another murder case was solved in Gamharia. Similarly, a Seraikela teacher’s death earlier this month was also alleged by kin to be murder.
Police in the district had earlier cracked a shooting case within 24 hours this month.
