Four Candidates Held As CID Widens JSSC-CGL Irregularities Probe

RANCHI – A team from the Jharkhand Criminal Investigation Department has arrested four candidates who had cleared the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission’s Combined Graduate Level examination, officials said. The arrests come as investigators continue probing alleged irregularities linked to the contentious recruitment test.
The CID issued a press release detailing the development. It said the case was registered as CID PS Case No. 01/2025, concerning discrepancies in the JSSC-CGL exam conducted by the commission in 2023.
Among those held is Deepak Kumar, a resident of Duplex Sunshine Apartment near Shyamli Hotel in Nawadih, under Dhanbad district. Investigators also detained Vijay Kumar Tiwari, who lives in Dhadkidho village under Roam post office in Dhanbad’s Rajganj police station area.
Umesh Kumar Rai, whose native village is Dayal in Bihar’s Bhojpur district, was arrested as well. He currently resides in the New BCCL Colony in Dugda, under Bokaro district. Investigators said the fourth accused, Anand Kumar Singh, hails from Chatra village in Bihar’s Saran district and now lives at Sudamdih Riverside Market, under the Sudamdih police station area in Dhanbad.
The CID had earlier launched an inquiry into alleged manipulation and paper leaks tied to JSSC recruitment examinations. The commission’s Ranchi office was raided as part of the same investigation, with officials questioning senior staff over the alleged fraud.
Meanwhile, the JSSC-CGL controversy has triggered weeks of student unrest across Jharkhand. The state cabinet had earlier scrapped the CGL exam following a 24-day agitation by aspirants demanding transparency in the recruitment process.
However, the Jharkhand High Court subsequently intervened in the matter. The court stayed the government’s order cancelling JSSC-CGL and CDPO appointments, complicating the state’s handling of the row.
Several affected candidates had moved the High Court against the cancellation, arguing that many successful aspirants were being penalised despite having no role in the alleged malpractice. Opposition leaders have also weighed in on the controversy.
Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi had earlier questioned the CID probe and renewed his demand for a CBI inquiry into the exam irregularities. The state government has maintained that the investigation into the JSSC-CGL matter will continue.
Officials said further arrests could not be ruled out as the investigation into the alleged exam malpractice progresses.
