RANCHI – A daring attempt to rob an SBI ATM in Khunti ended in disaster for the culprits as the cash inside burned due to a fire caused during their act.
In the Murhu police station area, near Bichna village on the Khunti-Simdega road, the thieves targeted the ATM late on Saturday night.
They began by disabling the security system, damaging nearby CCTV cameras before using a gas cutter to break into the ATM.
However, the heat from the cutter ignited the cash inside, leading to a blaze that quickly spread to the cash box.
Over ₹12 lakh stored in the ATM were completely destroyed in the fire, leaving nothing for the thieves to steal.
An automatic siren was triggered as the fire broke out, forcing the robbers to flee the scene before completing the heist.
Police investigations are underway, and forensic teams are examining the damaged ATM and its surroundings for evidence.
Authorities suspect the involvement of organized crime due to the precision with which the CCTV cameras were destroyed.
Residents have expressed concerns over repeated incidents of ATM targeting in the region.
