Palamu: Lesliganj Police Seize 988 Bottles of Illegal Liquor

MEDININAGAR – Acting on secret information, Palamu police seized 988 bottles of foreign and local liquor in a raid on a grocery shop in Oria village, Lesliganj.

Following a tip-off, the police, under Superintendent Reeshma Rameshan’s directive, raided a grocery shop across from Oria’s middle school on Monday evening.

Upon spotting the police, shop owner Nagmani Mehta attempted to flee but was detained by officers at the scene.

Mehta, 36, later admitted to hiding large amounts of foreign and local liquor at his shop and residence.

The raid team, led by Station Officer Raju Kumar Gupta, found 988 bottles of various foreign and local liquors, including brands like Kingfisher, Royal Challenge, and McDowell’s, and 95 bottles of Tanaka brand local liquor.

According to police, the seized alcohol has an estimated market value exceeding one lakh rupees.

Mehta was formally arrested and is now in judicial custody.

“This crackdown is part of an intensified campaign to curb illegal liquor and drug trade during the election period,” Gupta said, emphasizing ongoing raids in the region.

This incident is registered under Lesliganj police station case number 119/2024, and Mehta faces charges under sections of the Excise Act and other related laws.
