Internet Ban Case Reaches Jharkhand High Court

HC Refuses to Stay Internet Suspension Order for JSSC Exam

Key Points:

• PIL filed against internet shutdown for JSSC exam

• HC declines to immediately halt internet suspension

• State given 4 weeks to file response on shutdown rules

RANCHI – The Jharkhand High Court has refused to stay the government’s order suspending internet services for a state exam, while seeking its response on shutdown protocols.

A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Jharkhand High Court challenging the internet shutdown ordered for the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) examination.

Meanwhile, the division bench comprising Justice Anand Sen and Justice Anubhav Rawat Chaudhary heard the petition contesting the internet service suspension.

However, the court declined to grant an immediate stay on the order halting internet services.

On the other hand, the bench directed the state government to file a reply within four weeks.

Moreover, the court asked the government to explain the rules and protocols for implementing internet shutdowns.

In contrast, the petitioner argued that the blanket suspension of internet services was unjustified and disproportionate.

Besides, concerns were raised about the impact on essential services and daily life due to the internet blackout.

Furthermore, the case highlights the growing debate over internet shutdowns during exams to prevent cheating.
