Jamshedpur Launches ‘No Spit’ Campaign for Cleanliness

City aims to improve Swachh Survekshan 2024 ranking with new initiative

Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee partners with Tata Steel UISL to promote public hygiene and cleanliness.

JAMSHEDPUR – A ‘No Spit’ campaign has been initiated to boost the city’s performance in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan 2024.

The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) and Tata Steel UISL (JUSCO) have jointly launched the ‘No Spit’ campaign.

City Manager Christina Kachhap and Joy Gudia of JNAC spearheaded the initiative, beginning in Bistupur Market.

The campaign aims to:

1. Raise awareness about the harmful effects of public spitting

2. Discourage the use of tobacco products in public spaces

3. Improve the overall cleanliness and hygiene of Jamshedpur

Two-Phase Approach

The campaign will be implemented in two phases:

Phase 1: Awareness

– Educate citizens about the negative impacts of public spitting

– Encourage behavioral change through community engagement

Phase 2: Enforcement

– Impose fines on individuals caught spitting in public areas

– Strengthen monitoring and reporting mechanisms

JNAC Deputy Municipal Commissioner Krishna Kumar stated, “We urge all residents to cooperate in making Jamshedpur cleaner and more beautiful. Only through collective effort can we achieve a truly clean city.”

Jamshedpur’s Previous Achievements

The city has a strong track record in cleanliness initiatives:

– Received Clean City Award in the previous Swachh Survekshan

– Ranked first in Jharkhand for cities with 1-10 lakh population in Swachh Survekshan 2023

– Maintained top position in Jharkhand for five consecutive years since 2019

– Earned ODF++ and Three Star Certification

Swachh Survekshan 2024 Focus

The upcoming survey will emphasize the ‘Triple R’ approach:

– Reuse

– Reduce

– Recycle

Point distribution:

– 60% (5,705 points) for Service Level Progress

– 26% (2,500 points) for Certification

– 14% (1,295 points) for Mass Movement

Additional Initiatives

JNAC is also focusing on:

– Reducing single-use plastic

– Educating shopkeepers about plastic ban

– Promoting sustainable waste management practices
