Body of Drowned Youth Found in Kharkai River Near Dobo Bridge

Sumit Modi’s body recovered after five-day rescue operation.

The body of Sumit Modi, who drowned while bathing in the under-construction check dam at Asangi, was found near the Dobo Bridge, about 20 kilometers from the incident site.

JAMSHEDPUR – On Thursday evening, the police recovered the body of Sumit Modi from the Kharkai River near Dobo Bridge. Sumit had drowned on Sunday afternoon while bathing in the under-construction check dam at Asangi in RIT.

The body was spotted around 6:00 PM and was recovered with the help of local divers.

The police have sent the body for post-mortem. The rescue operation, which lasted for four days and involved the NDRF team from Ranchi, had concluded without success.

Sumit’s body was eventually found on the fifth day, about 20 kilometers from the incident site. Another drowned youth, Aditya Mahato, was found about 1.5 kilometers from the check dam.

Community Response

Former Adityapur Nagar Parishad Vice President Purendra Narayan Singh, former Ward 24 Councillor Dhiren Mahto, JMM leader Ghanshyam Mandal, Parmeshwar Pradhan, and police officials from Kapali, Sonari, and RIT were present at the scene.

The local diver team, led by Debashish Dhivar, assisted in recovering the body around 10:00 PM.

Sumit’s family was called to identify the body, and after confirmation, the police took it for post-mortem.

Expressions of Sympathy

The tragic discovery of Sumit’s body caused immense grief among his family and the community.

Purendra Narayan Singh expressed condolences and stressed the need for special relief packages for the families of both Sumit and Aditya.

He highlighted that both youths were the sole earners of their families and the incident had left their homes in deep sorrow.

He also expressed gratitude to the entire rescue team.

Recognition for Local Divers

Singh called for recognition and financial support for the local diver team, led by Debashish Dhivar.

Despite the NDRF team’s efforts, it was the local team that initiated and concluded the successful rescue operation.

Singh assured that he would seek proper recognition and a regular financial package for these divers, who are always the first to assist in water-related emergencies.
