JAMSHEDPUR – The Jharkhand government has recommended diverting 99.256 hectares of forest land for the proposed Dhalbhumgarh Airport project near Jamshedpur, marking a significant step towards enhancing regional air connectivity.

The Forest, Environment & Climate Change Department of Jharkhand has given its approval for the land diversion, paving the way for the airport’s development. This decision comes after a thorough evaluation of the project’s environmental impact and potential benefits to the region.

Key aspects of the recommendation include:

1. Forest area proposed for diversion: 99.256 hectares

2. Location: Jamshedpur Forest Division

3. Recommending authority: Special Secretary, Forest, Environment & Climate Change Department

4. Additional conditions: To be outlined in a separate letter

A high-ranking official from the Jharkhand government, speaking anonymously, expressed enthusiasm for the project. “The Dhalbhumgarh Airport will revolutionize Jamshedpur’s accessibility and economic landscape. We’ve carefully balanced development needs with environmental considerations,” the official stated.

The proposal now rests with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, for final approval.

Given the project’s importance for regional growth, state officials anticipate a swift review process by the central government.

Dhalbhumgarh Airport Limited (DAL) is a joint venture company. As per the MoU signed on 24th January 2019, AAI holds 51% holding and remaining 49% holding is with the State Government.

Environmental advocates are calling for rigorous implementation of compensatory measures. An environmental policy expert, commented, “It’s crucial that development projects like this adhere strictly to afforestation guidelines and other ecological safeguards.”

Once operational, the Dhalbhumgarh Airport is expected to catalyze tourism, trade, and economic activities in the Jamshedpur region, potentially generating substantial employment opportunities for local residents.

Shashank Shekhar Swain, a rail, aviation & space enthusiast and a member of Indian Railways Fan Club (IRFCA) & IndiaRailInfo (IRI) welcomed the progress and said: “ Things are looking up now and the ball is now at the Centre’s court. Let us see how fast the project sees fruition.”
