Patamda’s Red Gold: Tomatoes Shine in National Market
Local produce gains fame, farmers seek infrastructure boost
East Singhbhum’s agricultural prowess comes to the forefront as its tomatoes capture attention across multiple states.
JAMSHEDPUR – The tomato production in the East Singhbhum district, especially from Patamda and Bodam blocks, is gaining increasing attention in markets across the country.
Tomatoes from East Singhbhum, lately, have gained special popularity in several state markets, such as Delhi, Patna, and Bhubaneswar.
The district, on the other hand, has also benefited from its rich black cotton soil, which is famously known for its high nutrient content. This soil plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality and lifespan of the produce.
Sources say that it is also important to note that tomatoes have been traditionally been chosen as the primary agricultural product under the ‘One District One Product’ initiative in East Singhbhum.
The District Horticulture Department has reported a remarkable annual yield of 29,115 metric tons from 1,428 hectares of cultivated land.
"Our tomatoes have been receiving attention for their vibrant color and longer shelf life," commented Yadunath Gorai, a forward-thinking farmer. "We are currently delivering more than 50 tonnes of shipments every day to West Bengal, exclusively."
However, Despite the remarkable achievements, farmers continue to encounter obstacles caused by insufficient infrastructure, specifically the lack of cold storage facilities.
On the other hand, during the peak season, an excess of supply can lead to a significant drop in prices, which can be so severe that farmers are left with no choice but to abandon their crops in the fields.
Niharika, an agriculture expert, emphasized the pressing need for versatile cold storage units in Patamda. These units would help stabilize prices and minimize waste in the agricultural sector.
According to local farmers, the potential for tomato cultivation to boost rural prosperity is significant, provided that the government provides adequate support for storage and security.
