Jharkhand High Court Rules in Favor of Tata Steel in 1996 Case

The Jharkhand High Court has ruled in favor of Tata Steel Limited in a longstanding legal battle against Punj & Sons dating back to 1996.

The Jharkhand High Court has delivered a judgment in favor of Tata Steel Limited (TSL) in a case against Punj & Sons that has been ongoing since 1996.

JAMSHEDPUR – In a significant ruling, the Jharkhand High Court has favored Tata Steel Limited in the case Tata Steel Limited vs. Punj & Sons, a legal dispute that has persisted since 1996.

Punj & Sons Private Limited was allotted a 3.544-acre plot in the Burmamines area under a provisional agreement, intended for industrial purposes with the understanding that they would relocate to Adityapur following the completion of the Adityapur Area Industrial Development Authority (AIDA) scheme.

Despite the completion of the AIDA scheme and additional time provided by Tata Steel, Punj & Sons did not vacate the premises.

Consequently, Tata Steel filed Title Suit No. 3 in 1971 seeking their eviction.

The suit was decided in Tata Steel’s favor in 1986.

However, Punj & Sons appealed the decision in the lower appellate court, which ruled in their favor in 1996.

Tata Steel then challenged the appellate court’s decision in the Jharkhand High Court, which took up the case as Second Appeal No. 67/1996.

During the litigation, Punj & Sons sold the property to M/s Vani Insulation Private Limited on October 21, 2014.

Subsequently, Vani Insulation, through its attorney Dilip Goyal, filed to be included as a necessary party in the appeal, a request granted by the High Court on May 10, 2016.

After extensive legal proceedings, the Jharkhand High Court heard the second appeal and delivered its judgment on June 13, 2024, ruling in favor of Tata Steel.

This judgment concludes a prolonged legal battle, reinforcing Tata Steel’s legal standing and bringing resolution to a case that has spanned decades.
