This prestigious honor, India’s highest civilian award, brings a wave of joy across Bihar, including among Thakur’s family members.
DESK – The late Karpoori Thakur, renowned for his dedication to social justice and welfare of the backward classes, has been honored with the Bharat Ratna.
Thakur, who served as Bihar’s Chief Minister twice, is remembered for his simplicity and integrity.
Despite his high office, he remained true to his humble roots, living in a modest hut.
This award, announced by the Narendra Modi government, recognizes his lifelong commitment to using politics for social change.
Born in Samastipur district, Thakur’s legacy continues to inspire.
Thakur joins a distinguished group of Bihar-born Bharat Ratna recipients, including India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
Prasad, a key figure in India’s independence and the drafting of its Constitution, received the honor in 1962.
His contributions and leadership were pivotal in shaping modern India.
Other notable recipients from Bihar include Shehnai maestro Vismillah Khan, who was honored in 2001, and Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan, a prominent figure in India’s independence movement and later an anti-corruption crusader, awarded in 1999.
Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal and the architect of modern Bengal, was also a Bihar native honored with this prestigious award in 1961.
The Bharat Ratna recognizes exceptional service in various fields, including art, literature, science, and public service.
Initiated by the country’s first President, this honor includes a certificate signed by the President and a medal, and is proposed by the Prime Minister.
The tradition of this award, which can also be conferred posthumously, underscores the nation’s appreciation for extraordinary contributions to society.
