Israel launched a major military operation in the West Bank, resulting in the deaths of eight Palestinians. The crackdown aimed to respond to recent attacks on Israeli settlers and took place in the Jenin refugee camp. The incursion drew condemnation from Palestinians and several Arab countries.
World Desk – Israel launched a significant military operation in the occupied West Bank, involving drone strikes and the deployment of hundreds of troops into a militant stronghold.
According to different media channels reporting the issue, the operation, reminiscent of tactics used during the second Palestinian uprising, aimed to respond to recent attacks on Israeli settlers.
The crackdown took place in the Jenin refugee camp, resulting in the deaths of at least eight Palestinians and dozens of injuries.
The fighting in Jenin, which began in the early hours of the morning, continued throughout the day, with black smoke rising from the densely populated camp. Israeli forces used military bulldozers to clear the streets, while exchanges of fire and the buzzing of drones echoed in the background. The military blocked traffic in and out of Jenin, effectively turning the city into a ghost town.
Palestinian youths occasionally threw stones at army vehicles, adding to the tense atmosphere. The incursion drew condemnation from Palestinians, as well as from Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the operation, stating that it aimed to put an end to terrorism in Jenin. He claimed that militant command centers and weapons supplies were being destroyed with minimal harm to civilians. The military spokesman accused militants of operating near a United Nations building and storing weapons in a mosque.
The United Nations expressed alarm over the scale of the Israeli forces’ operation in a densely populated refugee camp and pledged to mobilize humanitarian aid. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees highlighted the urgent need for food, drinking water, and milk powder in the affected area.
As the military operation continues, concerns grow about the escalation of violence and potential international criticism. Experts predict that the operation may conclude within a day or two to avoid further casualties and possible involvement of militant groups from Gaza or Lebanon.
The ongoing violence in the West Bank has resulted in over 130 Palestinian deaths this year alone. The clashes reflect the absence of a political process and are exacerbated by increased West Bank settlement construction and violence by extremist settlers.
