Yemen’s civil war began eight years ago. Since then, the children there are in dire humanitarian crisis. More than 11,000 children have been killed or maimed in the country so far in the civil war.
The UN children’s agency UNICEF said the actual number of casualties could be much higher. News from AFP.
“Thousands of children have lost their lives, and thousands more are at risk of dying from preventable diseases and starvation,” said Kathryn Russell, the organization’s executive director. About 2.2 million Yemeni children suffer from severe malnutrition. A quarter of them are under five years of age. Most are at extreme risk of cholera, measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases.
Thousands of people have died in the country as a result of the war or indirectly due to unsafe drinking water, disease outbreaks, starvation and other effects. According to UNICEF’s latest statistics, 3,774 child deaths were confirmed between March 2015 and September 2022.
A UN-brokered ceasefire was in effect by 2 October. But then the disputing parties could not extend its term. UNICEF says 62 children have been killed since the ceasefire ended. UNICEF has asked for 4 million 44 million dollars in financial assistance to deal with the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
