MTMH expands services, to organise cancer awareness rally

Jamshedpur: Meherbai Tata Memorial Hospital (MTMH), a trust hospital at Jamshedpur was established in 1975 to cater to cancer patients of this region. It is named after Lady Meherbai Tata, wife of Sir Dorabji Jamshedji Tata. In 2017, Tata Trusts approved a project to upgrade MTMH from a 72- bedded cancer hospital to a comprehensive 128-bedded cancer care facility through investment in civil infrastructure and equipment.

The foundation laying ceremony for this project was done on 2nd March 2018 by Mr. Ratan Tata and the upgraded hospital was inaugurated by him on 13th March 2019. MTMH, a 128-bedded hospital now offers comprehensive cancer care facility, including Medical and Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology with TMH, Palliative Care and advanced diagnostic facilities (CT, MRI, PET-CT).

It has an NABL accredited laboratory. Image guided biopsies, not done anywhere else in Jamshedpur, are routinely carried out at MTMH. The infrastructure includes a Day Care chemotherapy ward, Pritpal Palliative Care Centre (funded by Suri Foundation) and well- equipped general wards and cabins. –

In addition, a state- of-the- art True Beam radiotherapy machine, the only one of its kind in Jharkhand helps to treat patients with the most advanced and precise radiation therapy.

However, there is need for continuous improvement to keep pace with patient requirements. MTMH is therefore further expanding its services by installing a new MRI machine in the TMH campus for the convenience of admitted patients. At present, sick patients are transported to MTMH campus for MRI scan. With the installation of 2nd MRI, patients will save time and patient transportation will be safer.

A 4-bedded Intensive Care Unit at MTMH will be inaugurated on December 22 for patients requiring critical care. Three specialized cabins have been constructed for blood cancer patients who need to be protected from infection.

Another first for Jharkhand is Lutetium therapy, which will start soon at MTMH, for Prostate Cancer patients who have not responded to conventional treatment.

A cancer awareness rally is being organized together with Inner Wheel Club of Jamshedpur on November 9th to educate the public. School children, doctors, nurses and prominent members of society will be participating in this rally.

Children’s day will be celebrated for children fighting cancer at Kudy Mahanty Auditorium on November 14th where MTMH would like to recognize these brave hearts as well as thank sponsors who have donated towards their treatment.

MTMH accepts patients under the PM-JAY (Ayushman Bharat) scheme. Many patients are also supported through Mukhyamantri Gambhir Bimari Yojana. Besides these, corporates and individuals support poor patients through generous donations (KMCO Trust, Suri Seva Foundation, JCAPCPL, Tinplate to name a few). The endeavour of MTMH is to ensure that no cancer patient suffers due to lack of fund and it is able to do so because of the immense support from Jamshedpur society.
