Saryu Roy Presses for Justice to 1984 Riot Victims

MLA Highlights Long Wait for Justice by Jharkhand’s Sikh Families Affected by 1984 Riots

Decades of Delay: Jharkhand Sikh Community Awaits Justice Post 1984 Riots

RANCHI – Following the assassination of Mrs. Indira Gandhi in 1984, anti-Sikh riots erupted across India, severely impacting the Sikh community in Jharkhand.

Significant violence against Sikhs occurred in Palamu, Ranchi, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Dhanbad, and Jamshedpur.

Despite years having passed, the affected Sikh families in Jharkhand have yet to receive justice or compensation.

This ongoing issue has been attributed to previous governments’ indifference and bureaucratic hurdles.

Satnam Singh Gambhir, from Jamshedpur, brought this matter to the Jharkhand High Court through a writ petition.

Subsequently, a one-member inquiry commission was established in 2016.

However, in seven years, the commission has only recommended compensation for 41 individuals, and many affected sites remain unvisited.

Jamshedpur East MLA, Saryu Rai, addressed this grave concern during Zero Hour in the Assembly.

He highlighted the unfortunate reality that almost 40 years after the riots, the victimized Sikh families still struggle for compensation and justice.

Rai urged the government to expedite justice and compensation for these families.

Responding to this call for action, the Honorable Assembly Speaker directed the matter to the relevant department for immediate resolution.
