Elderly Woman Assaulted, Locked in Balcony After Robbery

JAMSHEDPUR – A woman was assaulted and robbed of her jewelry after three unidentified persons posing as census workers entered her flat in the Mango police station area on Monday.
The incident occurred at Shri Krishna Udyan Apartment on Jawaharnagar Road Number 15. According to police, the accused targeted the flat in broad daylight while the resident, identified as Leelavati Amma, was alone at home.
A woman first approached Leelavati Amma, introducing herself as a census department employee and engaging her in conversation. Two men subsequently arrived at the flat as the conversation continued.
The three then allegedly pushed Leelavati Amma inside the flat and held her hostage. She was kept confined for nearly half an hour, during which the accused assaulted her repeatedly.
Police said the attackers snatched a gold chain and earrings from the victim during the assault. When she resisted, the accused reportedly misbehaved with her further, leaving her with a serious mouth injury and a broken tooth.
After completing the robbery, the accused locked Leelavati Amma in the flat’s balcony and fled the scene. She managed to draw the attention of neighbours by raising an alarm from the balcony.
Neighbours rushed to free her and alerted her family members soon after. Her husband, B.S. Pillai, who works as a sales manager at an auto showroom in Dimna, reached the spot upon receiving the information.
Mango police also arrived at the scene after being alerted and began investigating the case. Officers are examining CCTV camera footage from the surrounding area in an effort to identify the accused.
The Jamshedpur incident has left residents of the area in a state of alarm, given that it took place in broad daylight. The city has recorded a string of similar robberies in recent weeks, including a jewelry shop theft in Bagbera and a liquor shop burglary in Sidgora.
Meanwhile, police in the district had earlier cracked down on a theft gang, arresting five accused, and also investigated a locked-house theft in Kapali. However, a similar case involving stolen jewelry and cash in Ambedkar Nagar remains under investigation.
Besides the robbery cases, the Mango area has separately been in the news over an ongoing anti-encroachment drive on government land.
