Key Points:

- Calls for local resources to identify unsung heroes of the incident.
- Criticizes administration for failing to enforce national mourning guidelines.
SERAIKELA – Former Chief Minister and Union Minister Arjun Munda commemorated the martyrs of the Kharsawan massacre by paying tribute at the memorial on Wednesday. He emphasized the importance of starting the year by honoring sacrifices made for the nation.
Munda reflected on his tenure, during which he undertook significant efforts to renovate and beautify the memorial site. “This place stands as a symbol of inspiration today,” he remarked, noting the annual influx of thousands who gather to honor the martyrs.
Restoration and Memorial Development
The Kharsawan site had lost its sanctity as it served as a market, diminishing its historical significance. As Chief Minister, Munda spearheaded the challenging task of restoring the location. The renovation has transformed it into a landmark of reverence and inspiration.
Administrative Shortcomings and Suggestions
Highlighting administrative gaps, Munda criticized the visible banners and posters of political parties during the state-declared seven-day mourning for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. “This disregard shows a lack of respect for the departed leader,” he added.
He also praised the Indian government’s initiative to honor freedom fighters across the country on the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda. He urged the state government to collaborate in identifying Kharsawan massacre martyrs, recommending the formation of a dedicated commission.
Legacy of the Massacre
The Kharsawan massacre occurred during a time when the region was under Odisha’s administration, later transitioning to Bihar and finally Jharkhand. Documentation of the victims remains incomplete due to negligence by past administrations. Munda stressed the need for thorough research and urged local resources to compile a list of martyrs to ensure due recognition.
Leaders in Attendance
Prominent BJP leaders including JB Tubid, former MLAs Mangal Singh Soy and Shashi Bhushan Samad, district president Uday Singh Deo, and other party officials such as Ratan Mahato and Amresh Goswami accompanied Munda in paying tribute.
