SERAIKELA – Police launched an awareness campaign against illegal poppy cultivation in Jurgu village under Chauka police station on Thursday.

The initiative aims to curb narcotic farming and promote alternative livelihoods. The police shared information about sustainable agricultural practices.

Alternative Livelihood Options

“Vegetable farming and horticulture can provide better income,” said a police official. The department has partnered with agricultural experts to guide farmers.

Recent surveys show successful vegetable farmers earn 40% more than poppy cultivators. Several villages have already switched to organic farming.

Multi-pronged Approach

The campaign also addresses road safety and witch-hunting prevention. Officials explained legal provisions under the Prevention of Witch Hunting Act.

Local authorities have increased surveillance in known poppy cultivation areas. The department plans similar awareness drives in other villages.
