JAMSHEDPUR – A 25-year-old resident of Ranidih, Anil Murmu, tragically drowned on Tuesday in Kharkai River near Baroda Ghat while rescuing a young man from drowning.
Murmu reportedly noticed a youth struggling in the river around 11 a.m. and immediately leapt into the water to assist.
Although he successfully pulled the young man to safety, he became submerged in the deep waters during the attempt.
Witnesses present at the scene rushed to extract Murmu from the river and transported him to Tata Main Hospital (TMH), where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Eyewitnesses stated that Murmu had been bathing near the riverbank when he noticed the other man’s distress.
Without hesitation, he entered the river to save him, ultimately sacrificing his own life in the process.
Following the incident, Murmu’s family declined a postmortem examination.
In accordance with the family’s wishes, local police obtained a written statement from them and released the body for final rites.
