Elephant Safety Measures in Chakulia Explored

Joint Team Investigates Elephant Crossings in Chakulia for Potential Underpasses or Overpasses

Efforts to ensure safe crossings for elephants in the Chakulia forest area lead to a detailed site inspection by a multi-agency team.

JAMSHEDPUR – A multi-agency team recently evaluated the Chakulia forest area to enhance safety measures for elephant crossings.

This initiative was spurred by increased elephant activity near railway tracks.

The team’s visit aimed at identifying optimal locations for the construction of underpasses or overpasses.

This would facilitate safer passages for elephants across critical points.

The collaborative effort involved officials from the Wildlife Institute of India, railway, and forest department.

Key participants included Railway RPF OC Ghatsila JC Das, AOM Kharagpur Sunil Kumar, and others.

They focused on the stretch between Kahani Mohali Hot and Kokapara station on the Jharkhand border.

Jahidul Hussain from the Wildlife Institute of India highlighted the use of a map to pinpoint elephant crossing points.

This map guided their inspection across the identified elephant corridor site.

The findings of this detailed examination will inform a report for senior officials.

This report will recommend the construction of either an underpass or overpass.

Such infrastructure aims to mitigate the risk of elephants venturing out and crossing railway tracks.
