XLRI Hosts 10th Dr. Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration on Climate Action

FACES at XLRI Spotlights Sustainable Development and Climate Change with Ms. Vaishali Nigam Sinha’s Oration

As XLRI holds its 10th Dr. Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration, Ms. Vaishali Nigam Sinha illuminates the urgent need for climate action and sustainable development for the next generation.

JAMSHEDPUR – The Dr. Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration on Sustainable Development concluded its tenth year at XLRI’s Fr. Arrupe Centre for Ecology and Sustainability, or FACES.

Ms. Vaishali Nigam Sinha, co-founder and chairperson of sustainability at ReNew, gave the speech on the occasion, which had as its topic "Empowering The Next Generation: Taking Action On Climate Change & Sustainability."

In her powerful talk, Ms. Sinha emphasized the urgent nature of climate change and the fact that practitioners and policymakers are actively working to find answers rather than seeing it as a theoretical problem.

She emphasized the need to address climate change immediately, brought attention to problems with wildlife and electrical availability, and raised awareness of the possible loss of GDP as a result of global warming.

Dr. Kalyan Bhaskar also addressed the gathering. Dr. Bhaskar, a faculty member at XLRI, has recently been inducted as a member of the Committee on ESG and is the Convenor – Working Group on Circular Economy of the Bureau of Indian Standards.

Dr. L Tata Raghu Ram, Chairman of FACES at XLRI, spoke about various initiatives to promote sustainable development, including the introduction of a Post Graduate Certificate Program in CSR Leadership.

Fr. S George, Director at XLRI, made special mention of Dr. Verghese Kurien’s transformative impact on India’s dairy farming, morphing it into a self-sustaining industry.

Delivering the oration, Ms. Vaishali Nigam Sinha, Co-Founder and Chairperson – Sustainability at ReNew, emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change. She also highlighted the complications related to wildlife and electricity access, as well as the looming threat to GDP due to global warming.

The 10th edition of the Dr. Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration was centered on the theme "Empowering The Next Generation: Taking Action On Climate Change & Sustainability" and was organized by The Fr. Arrupe Center for Ecology and Sustainability (FACES) at XLRI.
