City’s Lifeline at Risk: Kharkai and Subarnarekha Rivers Turning Toxic; Crucial Meeting on Sunday

MLA Saryu Roy steps up efforts to save the city’s critical Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers, now severely polluted by drainage.

JAMSHEDPUR – A grave environmental concern has surfaced in Jamshedpur, as the city’s lifeline, the Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers, are showing signs of severe pollution. Approximately 40 large drains are reportedly discharging direct wastewater into the rivers, turning the water ominously dark and toxic.

Jamshedpur East’s MLA, Saryu Roy, took note of this situation following media reports, and conducted an inspection of several river ghats. He has decided to escalate the matter from the state to the central government.

Roy stated that a pivotal meeting is slated for the 28th, involving three municipal corporations, deputy commissioners, local MLAs, corporate representatives, and leaders from major organizations.

The aim is to devise effective solutions to safeguard the rivers.

Despite substantial annual funding, the rivers’ condition continues to deteriorate, making it imperative to resolve political disputes and focus on remedial actions.

Roy stressed that all party leaders must pledge to protect their city’s lifeline and ensure effective implementation of government schemes for river conservation.
