Kurmi community submits memo to Union Home Minister, demands ST status

Community delegation also demands inclusion of Kurmali language in 8th Schedule of Constitution

Jamshedpur: Members of the Kurmi community gathered in front of the Jamshedpur Deputy Commissioner’s office to submit a memorandum to the Home Minister of the country through the Deputy Commissioner.

The memorandum lists their three-point demands and urges the authorities to fulfill them as soon as possible, warning of a fierce movement if their demands are not met.

The Kurmi community from across the state and neighboring regions is demanding the inclusion of the Kurmi caste in the Scheduled Tribe, the recognition of the Kurmali language in the eighth schedule of the constitution, and the installation of a statue of India’s first freedom fighter, Raghunath Mahato, in the Parliament.

Representatives of the Kurmi community warned that if their demands are ignored during the ongoing budget session, they will halt rail services across Jharkhand on September 20, 2023. Furthermore, they threatened that the Kurmi community would not vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which could potentially hurt the party’s electoral prospects.
