Rahul Gandhi Spared from Personal Appearance in Ranchi Court Over Modi Surname Issue

The Jharkhand High Court provides significant relief to Rahul Gandhi, sparing him from personal appearance in Ranchi court in a dispute related to the Modi last name.

JAMSHEDPUR – After challenging the MP-MLA court of Ranchi’s ruling requiring personal attendance, Rahul Gandhi received a reprieve from the Jharkhand High Court during the hearing on July 4 last year.

The court extended the hearing date to August 16, and as a result, Rahul Gandhi is no longer required to be physically present, with certain restrictions granted to him.

This exemption comes as Pradeep Modi had filed a complaint against Gandhi in the Ranchi Civil Court for using the slur.

The case, currently under consideration by Anamika Kisku’s court, led to the intervention of the High Court where Justice SK Dwivedi presided.

Earlier, the MP-MLA court of Ranchi had asked Gandhi to appear in person, a request that was later overturned by the High Court.

Wednesday’s hearing saw the arguments presented by Rahul’s attorneys Piyush, Chitresh, and Dipankar Roy, culminating in the High Court’s decision to spare Gandhi from personal attendance.

Ranchi resident Pradeep Modi, who brought the Modi surname lawsuit after an alleged statement by Gandhi, also pursued a separate slander case, demanding Rs 20 crore in compensation.

The ruling marks a significant turn in the legal battle, as the Congress MP gains some breathing room in the contentious case.
