JAMSHEDPUR – Students and villagers laid siege to the Parsudih police station on Friday, demanding immediate arrests after a deadly assault on an LBSM College student.
Shukra Ho, a student of LBSM College, was attacked on Wednesday night. He had stepped out of the hospital around 10 p.m. to get food.
Four to five young men riding a bike approached him near Durga Puja Maidan Modh in the Parsudih police station area. They struck him from behind without warning, he said.
The assailants used sticks, an iron chain and other weapons. Ho suffered repeated blows to his head, arms and waist, according to his account.
Meanwhile, a large number of students, villagers and representatives of social organizations gathered at the police station on Friday. They staged a demonstration at the main gate of the premises.
The protesters demanded the immediate arrest of the accused. They also called for a fair investigation and strict action against those found guilty.
Demonstrators accused the police administration of negligence in handling the case. They warned that the agitation would be intensified if action was not taken soon.
Ho said he suspects the attack was carried out in revenge. He had reportedly handed over a young man and woman to the police after catching them inside the hostel premises a few days earlier.
He said he filed a written complaint at the police station after the assault. However, no arrest has been made in the case so far, he added.
Parsudih police station has recorded several violent incidents in recent months, including a purse-snatching case in June and a foiled robbery plot in April.
