Department Of Orthopaedics Trains Staff In Early Clubfoot Management

JAMSHEDPUR – The Department of Joint Replacement and Orthopaedics at Tata Main Hospital organised a workshop on the Ponseti Technique for the correction of clubfoot, also known as CTEV, on the hospital premises.
The programme was designed to strengthen awareness and build clinical skills around early management of clubfoot in young children. Organisers said the Ponseti method remains a widely accepted approach for the condition, involving gentle manipulation, serial casting and structured follow-up care.
Dr Vinita Singh, General Manager, Medical Services, inaugurated the workshop. The academic and practical sessions that followed were led by Dr J.K. Laik, Head of the Department of Joint Replacement and Orthopaedics, along with members of the departmental team.
The workshop was organised in association with the Tata Steel Foundation. Sessions during the programme included demonstrations and discussions on the principles of Ponseti correction, casting technique, follow-up protocols and measures to prevent recurrence of the condition.
Through the initiative, hospital officials said Tata Main Hospital aims to promote early detection and timely treatment of clubfoot. They added that effective correction of the condition would help affected children achieve better mobility and long-term functional outcomes.
The workshop adds to a series of recent initiatives undertaken by Tata Main Hospital and its associated institutions in the city. Tata Steel Foundation had earlier been involved in setting up oxygen plants at Joda and Noamundi as part of its broader healthcare support efforts.
Meanwhile, medical training and outreach programmes have continued to expand across the region, with the IMA’s national team recently welcoming a Jharkhand-based doctor as a member.
Besides clinical training, Tata Main Hospital has also been at the centre of emergency treatment cases in the city, including patients referred following a road accident on the Tata-Kandra road in Adityapur.
On the other hand, healthcare infrastructure in the wider Jharkhand region has also seen recent developments, with officials confirming that a new 30-bed hospital in Dumaria was set for inauguration.
In addition, discussions on strengthening the state’s healthcare capacity have continued at the policy level, with reports indicating plans to make RIMS Jharkhand’s largest hospital.
Hospital officials said further workshops on paediatric orthopaedic conditions would be organised periodically as part of the department’s ongoing training initiatives.
