JAMSHEDPUR – Police have achieved a significant breakthrough in a case involving extortion threats at an under-construction building in the Olidih OP area of the city.
The accused had allegedly halted construction work at the site on Sankosai Road number 5, demanded a levy from those involved, and threatened to kill anyone who resisted their demands.
Following a formal complaint lodged after the incident, police swiftly launched an investigation into the case. During the probe, officers identified three individuals allegedly involved in the crime and arrested them.
The arrested accused have been identified as Gaurav Kumar Raj alias Raja Singh, Pawan Kumar alias Golu, and Vishal Singh. Police said the accused had used a mobile phone to halt the construction work and press their demand for the levy.
During the investigation, police recovered and seized an Oppo mobile phone that had allegedly been used in the crime. Officers said the accused are currently being questioned as part of the ongoing probe.
Investigators are also examining other aspects of the case, including whether additional individuals were involved in the extortion attempt. Police said strict action would continue against anyone found engaged in extortion and other criminal activities in the area.
The investigation into the case remains ongoing, and police said further details linked to the incident may be revealed in the coming days.
The arrest comes amid a series of recent crackdowns on extortion-related crime reported from across the city. Officials had earlier confirmed a similar case in which a food delivery boy was attacked with a cleaver in the Telco area for refusing to pay extortion money.
Meanwhile, police in the city have continued to act swiftly against organised criminal activity, having recently busted a vehicle theft gang and arrested three individuals involved.
Besides extortion cases, violent altercations linked to disputes have also been reported recently in the city, including an incident in which a young man was critically injured in a knife attack at Burma Mines.
On the other hand, police have also acted against threats to public safety elsewhere in the district, having recently arrested two youths after seizing brown sugar and a mobile phone in Ghatshila.
In addition, similar levy-demand disputes tied to construction sites have surfaced in other parts of the state, including one incident where criminals shot a guard at a bypass construction site in Lohardaga.
Police said the investigation into the Olidih extortion case would continue, with further arrests possible depending on the outcome of ongoing questioning.
