Key Points:

  • Six arrested before planned dacoity in Chowka police station area
  • Pistol, live bullet, knives and stolen mobiles recovered
  • Accused Chamburam Munda has prior UAPA case against him

SERAIKELA – Police arrested six accused before they could execute a major dacoity in Chowka police station area.

The arrests followed a tip-off received on September 6. Officers learned that criminals had gathered at an abandoned primary school in Chutiyakhal Tola, Bariabera.

According to the information, the group was allegedly planning a significant criminal operation. A special team raided the spot and apprehended all six individuals present.

The accused were identified as Monsa Singh Munda, Chamburam Munda alias Chamura, and Soma Munda alias Sabzi. Deben Munda, another Soma Munda alias Karpa, and Ramjit Munda alias Mangra Munda were also among those held.

Police recovered a pistol and one live bullet from the accused. Officers also seized knives, a dauli, a hammer, seven mobile phones and three motorcycles.

Some of the recovered phones were reportedly stolen during earlier robberies. Seraikela SP Manoj Swargiyari disclosed the details during a press conference held at Chowka police station on Monday.

During questioning, the accused admitted involvement in an attempted robbery at a liquor shop in Bansa on August 19. They also confessed to looting cash and mobile phones from Madhuri petrol pump in Urmal.

In addition, the group admitted to snatching mobile phones at Mount 10 View Hotel in Ghatdulmi on September 3. Three mobile phones linked to these earlier cases were also recovered from the accused.

The SP said several of the arrested individuals already have criminal cases registered against them. Chamburam Munda alias Chamura, in particular, has previously faced charges under UAPA and other serious sections.

Police are now investigating the gang’s possible involvement in other criminal incidents. The operation was carried out by Chowka police station in-charge Gaurav Kumar and Kuchai police station in-charge Ravindra Kumar Munda.

Armed police personnel from Chowka police station also took part in the raid. Further action against the accused is expected to follow in the coming days.

“The gang has confessed to their involvement in multiple robbery and loot cases across the district,” Swargiyari said, addressing reporters at the press conference.

The arrests add to a series of recent crime crackdowns across Seraikela-Kharsawan district. Police in the region recently solved a separate grain shop burglary within 24 hours. Nearby, officers also acted against illegal transport, seizing material in a sand-laden hyva seizure. Elsewhere in the wider region, a separate operation led to a vehicle theft gang bust recovering stolen bikes.
