GAMHARIA – Authorities here launched the Ullas Literacy Fortnight on Monday, aiming to identify and register every illiterate resident within the block’s school catchment areas. The initiative, part of a wider district-level campaign, runs from September 1 to September 14 through a series of outreach activities designed to draw non-literate residents into the programme.
Nodal officer Prabha Shankar Tiwari inaugurated the fortnight at an auditorium inside the Gamharia block office by lighting a ceremonial lamp. He said all sections of society needed to come together to eliminate illiteracy, and called for a collective effort to ensure no eligible person is left out once the campaign concludes.
Block Resource Person Rekha Kumari urged teachers to work in mission mode to make the programme a success. Cluster Resource Persons Amresh Srivastava and Sujata also addressed the gathering and helped resolve difficulties participants faced during online registration.
Officials briefed block resource persons, cluster resource persons, nodal teachers and volunteers on the full scope of the programme. Workshops, village-level meetings and street plays will be used through the fortnight to motivate illiterate residents to join the initiative, organisers said.
School students will also take part through morning processions and cycle rallies at the school level. They will visit catchment areas to spread awareness about the Ullas programme among local residents, similar to earlier community outreach efforts such as the assistive device distribution camp and a recent life support training session held in the block. A strategy for the block-level rollout was finalised through internal discussions among teachers and volunteers, with targets set for the campaign’s duration.
Those present at the launch included Block Resource Person Rekha Kumari, Cluster Resource Person Amresh Srivastava, Devendra Singh, Yashoda Kumari, Sujata Kumari, Varun Mahato, Ranglal Mahato and Devendra Singh Sardar, along with several nodal teachers, volunteers and school in-charges. The gathering ended with attendees pledging by voice vote to make the Ullas programme a success.
