Subarnarekha, Kharkai Rivers Cross Danger Mark as Jamshedpur Rains Worsen

Subarnarekha, Kharkai Rivers Cross Danger Mark as Jamshedpur Rains Worsen

Dam Gates Opened Upstream Add to Flood Threat Along Riverbanks

Key Points:

  • Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers flow above danger mark in Jamshedpur
  • Water enters several homes in low-lying riverside localities
  • Administration advises residents to avoid riverbanks amid rising flow

JAMSHEDPUR – The flood threat in Jamshedpur has increased sharply after continuous rainfall combined with the opening of dam gates in nearby areas. The Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers, which flow through the city, have risen rapidly and are now flowing above the danger mark.

Residents living in low-lying areas along the riverbanks have reported growing distress as water levels climb. The rise has already caused hardship for many families settled near the two rivers.

Continuous rain has intensified the flow of water in both rivers over recent hours. Meanwhile, the release of additional water from nearby reservoirs and dams has further swollen the rivers.

Water has entered several riverside localities as a result. In some homes, residents have expressed concern over safety and the need to move to higher ground.

The district administration has urged residents of low-lying areas to remain alert. Officials have appealed to people to avoid venturing near riverbanks or areas with fast-flowing water.

Besides the two major rivers, several other low-lying parts of the city have also experienced waterlogging due to the sustained rainfall. The local administration and police have been monitoring the situation closely.

“Every hour of continued rain adds to the risk for people living near the river,” a local resident said. Officials have appealed to residents not to pay heed to rumours and to follow administrative instructions during any emergency.

The situation follows a similar rise in water levels reported at the Galudih barrage, where multiple gates were opened earlier this month. That release had already prompted alerts for riverbank areas downstream.

Heavy rain in recent days had also caused a house collapse in Kapali, injuring three people. Similarly, rain-related flooding has previously affected homes in low-lying parts of the district, including a recent instance when water reached several residences.

Meanwhile, authorities in nearby West Singhbhum have also flagged rain-related disruptions, including at the Bokna bridge, which was submerged following torrential rain. Officials expect the situation in Jamshedpur to remain serious over the coming hours as rainfall continues.
