  • Police begin probe, examine CCTV footage near vegetable market

JAMSHEDPUR – A woman doctor has lost gold ornaments worth nearly ₹2.5 lakh near a vegetable market in Sakchi.

Dr. Aarti, a resident of Mango, told police that she had purchased the gold ornaments from a jewellery shop just a day before the incident. She had driven to the vegetable market near Basant Talkies in Sakchi to buy vegetables.

She parked her car and was withdrawing cash from her purse to make the purchase. It was during this process that the ornaments are believed to have slipped from her bag unnoticed.

Sakchi remains one of Jamshedpur’s busiest commercial hubs, with its crowded market areas drawing large footfall through the day. The area has also seen prior cases of theft and loot targeting shoppers and traders, including a 2022 case in which jewelry loot cases were solved by city police.

Dr. Aarti realized her ornaments were missing only after some time had passed. She then searched the area extensively and questioned nearby vegetable vendors.

However, none of the vendors admitted to finding the missing jewellery despite her repeated inquiries. After an extensive search yielded no results, she approached Sakchi police station to file a written complaint.

She has named two vegetable vendors, identified as Ahmed and Rajesh Gupta, as suspects in her complaint. Dr. Aarti suspects the ornaments may have been picked up by one of them during the time she was shopping.

“I want the police to check the CCTV cameras installed in the area and recover my ornaments as soon as possible,” she said in her complaint. Meanwhile, the local market area has previously seen civic action, including an anti-encroachment drive in Sakchi conducted by municipal authorities.

Police have launched an investigation following the complaint. Officers are questioning shopkeepers in the vicinity of the incident.

Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from cameras installed near the spot where the ornaments are believed to have gone missing. The probe is aimed at finding clues that could help recover the gold ornaments.

Theft complaints involving markets and commercial areas have been reported in Jamshedpur before, including a case where a market theft worth ₹4 lakh was reported in Bagbera. In a separate past instance, the area also witnessed an inspection at Sakchi police station by the SSP.
