BOKARO — A 22-year-old man lost his life in a village pond in Chandrapura’s Jharnadeeh locality after he dived in to rescue his drowning cousin and managed to push him to safety but could not save himself.
Deepak Yadav had accompanied his cousin to the Jharnadeeh village pond for a morning bath. His cousin suddenly drifted into deep water and began to drown. Deepak jumped in without hesitation. He thrust his cousin toward the bank and out of the water. However, he himself got caught in the depth and could not resurface.
Villagers nearby heard the screams. They gathered at the pond immediately. A search lasting nearly one hour followed. Deepak’s body was eventually recovered from the water.
His family rushed him to the local DC hospital in Bokaro‘s Chandrapura. Doctors there declared him dead on arrival. The incident has triggered deep mourning across the village.
Deepak was the eldest son of Milton Yadav. The Chandrapura police station responded quickly after receiving word of the accident. Officers reached the drowning site in Bokaro and took charge of the situation. The body has been sent for postmortem examination.
“He gave his life for someone he loved,” said a grief-stricken local resident. “Nobody else would have jumped in like that.” Drowning accidents in unguarded village ponds have been a recurring concern in Jharkhand. Tragic accidental deaths in Bokaro have drawn public attention repeatedly in recent weeks.
Police are also investigating the pond’s depth and safety arrangements. The absence of any warning signs or safety infrastructure at the site is under scrutiny. Accidental deaths of young men in the region have raised broader questions about public safety measures.
Meanwhile, the cousin whom Deepak rescued was unharmed. He was helped out of the water by Deepak’s own effort. The family, still in shock, has been struggling to come to terms with the loss. Sudden deaths of young workers continue to devastate families across the region.
Deepak’s selfless act has become a subject of deep emotion in the village. The entire Jharnadeeh area is in mourning. Accidental deaths in Jharkhand villages have repeatedly highlighted the need for better safety awareness and infrastructure.
