JAMSHEDPUR – A railway employee was shot dead by two bike-borne assailants near the railway lobby gate in the Bagbera area of Jamshedpur late Sunday night, triggering panic across the locality.
The attack took place in the Bagbera police station area. Two unidentified gunmen arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire suddenly. The victim sustained critical injuries in the shooting.
Bystanders at the scene responded swiftly. They rushed the wounded man to the railway hospital for emergency treatment. However, attending doctors declared him dead on arrival.
City SP Lalit Meena reached the spot soon after. He initiated a formal inquiry into the incident. Meanwhile, police recovered a spent cartridge from the crime scene. The cartridge recovery indicated that the attackers arrived with a clear plan.
The victim, a resident of Adityapur, had multiple professional engagements. He was associated with Jamshedpur‘s railway-linked activities. Besides, he was reportedly active in land dealings in the area. According to sources, he also held responsibility for a levelling project at a Tatanagar-area railway parking lot.
Investigators are now examining footage from CCTV cameras installed near the site. Efforts to identify the assailants have been intensified. The police suspect that personal enmity or a business-related dispute may have motivated the attack. [Jamshedpur has witnessed a rising tide of crime in recent months, drawing political attention.]
The Adityapur area had earlier witnessed a brazen firing incident. In that case too, bike-borne criminals had opened fire, spreading panic among residents. Moreover, a youth had died in a separate firing incident in Sitaramdera. Similarly, a fruit trader was shot in broad daylight in another part of the city just weeks earlier.
“We have identified the key leads from the scene,” a senior police official said. “The culprits will be apprehended very soon.” The arrest of armed criminals in Parsudih earlier this month had shown that the police were actively pursuing such cases. In addition, another deadly clash in the city had prompted fresh calls for stronger law enforcement. Fear gripped the entire locality following Sunday’s shooting.
