Six Santali families forced to drink well water after tower breakdown

JAMSHEDPUR – Six Santali families in Shaharbeda village under Chandil subdivision face severe water crisis as solar water tower remains broken for six months, forcing tribal residents to consume contaminated well water.
The water tower was established through Mukhiya Fund. However, it operates through solar power system. The facility has been non-functional for half a year. No repair work has been undertaken so far.
The village’s only government handpump has also broken down. This has left residents without any clean water source. The panchayat level has not carried out handpump repairs.
Six families from Santali community in Simagoda hamlet are affected. They belong to Asanwani panchayat under Chandil subdivision. The tribal residents are deprived of clean drinking water.
Currently, villagers are consuming water from an old well. This water source may be harmful to health. Moreover, rainwater has contaminated the well water recently.
A diarrhea outbreak has spread in the area. This health crisis may be linked to water contamination. The outbreak has been reported over recent days.
Residents are compelled to drink polluted water due to circumstances. The government handpump repair remains pending at panchayat level. Besides, the water tower repair has not been initiated.
