JAMSHEDPUR – Workers and farmers observed the 43rd Kisan Mazdoor Ekta Diwas with a major street meeting at Birsa Chowk Sakchi.

The gathering commemorated a significant moment in labor history. “The 1982 strike faced severe police action,” a veteran participant recalled.

Historical Significance

The event marked India’s first joint worker-farmer protest after independence. Moreover, the 1982 strike saw nationwide demonstrations.

Meanwhile, ten protesters lost their lives in police action. However, their sacrifice strengthened the worker-farmer unity movement.

Current Demands

CITU leaders criticized recent government policies. Furthermore, they opposed the implementation of new labor codes.

On the other hand, union leaders demanded GST exemption for essential items. Moreover, they called for stricter regulations on futures trading.

Future Actions

The protesters burned photographs of corporate leaders. Meanwhile, they criticized anti-labor stances of major companies.

In addition, union leaders announced future protest plans. However, they would wait for the budget announcement first.
