MEDININAGAR – Bishrampur CO Rakesh Tiwari seized 15 tractors of illegally stored sand near Rajgurwa Hill in Palamu district on Friday.

The sand was found in a deserted area near Harhepa village, far from populated zones. Acting on a tip-off, CO Tiwari raided the site and handed over the seized sand to the police for further action.

According to local sources, illegal sand mining and storage have been rampant in the Rehla and Bishrampur police station areas. Sand mafias reportedly extract sand from the Koel River’s various ghats throughout the night. Dozens of tractors remain engaged in transporting the sand, which is sold at higher rates.

If a deal is confirmed, sand is delivered to the specified location overnight. When no buyers are available, the sand is dumped in isolated areas for later sale.

Upon receiving the information, CO Tiwari alerted both Rehla and Bishrampur police. However, both police stations initially claimed the location did not fall under their jurisdiction. After a delay of nearly 45 minutes, police personnel from both stations arrived, confirming that the site was under Bishrampur’s jurisdiction.

CO Rakesh Tiwari expressed his displeasure over the delay and reiterated that the campaign against illegal sand mafias will continue. “We will not tolerate illegal mining and storage in the region,” he said.

Meanwhile, residents have raised concerns about the environmental impact and growing influence of sand mafias in Palamu. Authorities are under pressure to intensify monitoring at riverbanks and isolated areas to prevent further illegal activities.
