Suicide prevention efforts in Jamshedpur are showing positive results, with a marked reduction in cases.
Key Points:
– Suicide cases in Jamshedpur dropped significantly from 2021 to 2024.
– Student suicides fell from 23 in 2021 to 9 by August 2024.
– Over 700 lives saved by Jeevan since its 2006 inception.
JAMSHEDPUR – Jamshedpur has witnessed a substantial decrease in suicide cases over recent years, reflecting the growing impact of local mental health advocacy.
The city-based suicide prevention center, Jeevan, reported a consistent decline in suicide rates from 2021 to 2024.
In 2021, there were 255 suicides, while by August 2024, this number had fallen to 129.
Student suicides showed a particularly significant drop, with cases reducing from 23 in 2021 to just 9 in the first eight months of 2024.
Rising Awareness and Support
Jeevan’s director, Jeoraj Jain, highlighted that the decline is paralleled by a rise in the number of people seeking help.
“In 2022-23, 748 individuals contacted our helpline, and we anticipate over 1000 by the end of 2024,” Jain stated.
This increase in outreach is a clear indication of growing awareness and the crucial role Jeevan plays in the community.
Jain also pointed out that Jamshedpur’s suicide rate has now dropped to 10 per lakh, slightly below the national average.
Challenges and Future Plans
Despite these positive trends, challenges remain.
Jeevan continues to operate with limited resources, primarily relying on volunteers and support from Tata Steel and JAMIPOL.
The state’s official suicide helpline has been largely ineffective, placing additional pressure on Jeevan’s operations.
To meet the increasing demand, Jeevan plans to expand its services, aiming for round-the-clock support.
However, current space constraints and resource limitations make this goal difficult to achieve.
"We’ve already begun placing signboards outside educational institutions, encouraging students to seek help,” said Dr. Jain.
Looking ahead, Jeevan is committed to further reducing the suicide rate in Jamshedpur and extending its impact beyond the region.
